Indigenous Fishers First - Port Alberni, British Columbia

Ten percent of the coast. One hundred percent of the value.

The seafood brand and sales portal for the fleet, licences and quota of the Big Fishing Deal - six vessels, forty licences, and a sablefish position holding 9.90% of the entire BC coastwide TAC. We do not sell fish at the dock. We sell finished product, with the harvester named on the label.

Why this brand exists

The fish was never the problem. The price stack was.

Ex-vessel is the bottom rung of a six-step ladder: first receiver, processor, wholesaler, distributor, foodservice, retail. Every rung above the deck is a margin the old model gave away. Sovereign.FISH exists to climb the ladder on behalf of the people who catch the fish.

Sablefish is repositioned as a premium branded loin, kama and flat-can product rather than a J-cut commodity. Hake and trawl bycatch become surimi, mince and portioned retail. Herring becomes kazunoko and spawn-on-kelp. And the 50-60% of biomass that used to go over the side becomes oil, collagen, gelatin and meal.

Same landed pound. Four to five times the realized value.

The fleet

Five steel and aluminum hulls, one aluminum dragger, and a lot of RSW.

Every vessel below is drawn from the condition and valuation surveys carried out by James Kitagawa, Certified Marine Surveyor (IIMS Canada #1083), for Leader Fishing Ltd. between January 2020 and February 2026. Specifications, official numbers, tonnages and valuations are quoted as surveyed. Every photograph below is of the named hull - Pacific Viking and Viking Fisher from the survey reports themselves, the other four from dated third-party vessel photography. The licence-to-hull assignment is the one remaining gap.

Five valued hulls595.18$7,850,000

Aggregate surveyed replacement value across the same five hulls is $28,000,000. Against an approximately $55M package ask, the steel is not what is being bought - the licences, the quota and the 9.90% sablefish position are. Valuations are as-surveyed on the dates shown, obtained by the surveyor from a local brokerage and not re-tested here. Southern Ridge was surveyed in water in January 2020 and needs a current survey before close.

What we harvest

The species under the package

Forty licences across sablefish, salmon seine, roe herring, offshore and Gulf hake, groundfish trawl, halibut and gillnet. Cold water, long seasons, and handling standards written for the top of the market rather than the middle of it.

Two whole sablefish on crushed ice
Anoplopoma fimbria

Sablefish / Black Cod

The anchor species. 665,324 lbs annual allocation, 9.90% of the coastwide TAC, and the highest oil content of anything we land.

Wild sockeye salmon portions with citrus and herbs
Oncorhynchus spp.

Wild Pacific Salmon

Sockeye, chinook, coho, chum and pink across the seine licences - fillets, cold and hot smoked, sujiko, ikura and the flat-can pack.

Bright yellow herring roe kazunoko on a dark plate
Clupea pallasii

Pacific Herring and Roe

Fourteen IFF plus three seine licences and two gillnet. Kazunoko for the Japanese gift market and traditional spawn-on-kelp from on-territory ponds.

Groundfish swimming above a sandy seabed
Merluccius productus

Pacific Hake

10.1M lbs a year, worked by the Pacific Viking. Feed-fish economics on the dock, surimi and mince economics once it passes through our own line.

Individually quick frozen groundfish portions in retail packaging
Turbot - rockfish - arrowtooth

Groundfish Trawl Mix

758,000 lbs of trawl species, portioned and IQF-d into premium Canadian retail instead of moving at $0.08-0.50 a pound.

Whole sablefish opened to show pale flesh on a board
Halibut and co-products

Halibut and Full Utilization

Fresh air-freight halibut, plus oil, collagen, gelatin, meal and specialty co-products from 5M+ lbs of trim that used to be waste.

The demand side

Why Hong Kong and Greater China, and why now.

Hong Kong eats more seafood per person than almost anywhere on earth, imports virtually all of it, and functions as the clearing house for premium product moving into the Mainland. This is a mature, discerning, high-value market - not a frontier one.

Per capita consumption
65.5kg / yr
Over three times the global average - second in Asia, eighth in the world
HK and Macao seafood imports, 2023
$5.9BCAD
Twelfth largest importer in the world. Canada's share is only 2.9%
Food supply imported
90%plus
Import growth averaged 3.9% a year across 2019 to 2023
Re-export trade with the Mainland
82.4%of total
Hong Kong is the gateway, not only the destination

The banquet channel is the target

Wedding banquets, business hosting and celebration dining move live and ultra-premium fish at USD 37 to 80 per kg wholesale. That is the price band our sablefish, live rockfish and air-freighted halibut are built for - not the commodity frozen block.

Hamper season is where provenance converts directly into price. Premium seafood hampers built on dried and preserved seafood, fish maw and roe are the established centrepiece of the luxury gifting category - and roe already signals abundance and offspring without inventing a story.

The Air-Land Fresh Lane changed the clock

Since August 2025, fresh and live seafood arriving at Hong Kong International Airport for re-export to the Mainland can be transferred within the air cargo terminal, cross the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge, and clear customs and quarantine directly in Zhuhai - no second inspection in Hong Kong.

Operationally that is the whole argument for the fresh programme. Halibut landed, packed and flown within 24 hours can reach a Guangdong table on a shorter clock than before, which is what makes fresh - not frozen - the highest-value form for this lane.

Sources: WWF-Hong Kong per-capita seafood consumption; Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, Fish and seafood trends in Hong Kong and Macao (2023 import data); Hong Kong Customs and Excise Department, Air-Land Fresh Lane. Market figures are 2026 observations and are not offers.

The sovereignty model

Crews earn more as the pie gets bigger.

The old settlement pays a share of a dockside price someone else sets. Ours pays a share of the finished value - quality-tied bonuses, an in-house first receiver that keeps the cost of buying fish inside the family, and a co-product pool on everything recovered from trim.

Open-book pricing across the value chain makes the harvester a partner rather than a supplier. The target is 30-40% of the premium, not the 8-10% the commodity chain leaves behind.

Read the harvester terms

What ships with every order

  • Named harvester and vessel on the label, not a generic Product of Canada.
  • QR provenance to set date, area, gear type and handling record.
  • Indigenous-owned chain of custody from licence to invoice.
  • Cold-chain attestation with time-temperature history from rail to receiving door.
  • CFIA-registered processing and full HACCP documentation for export.

Packaging artwork and story-card illustration to be commissioned from a Nuu-chah-nulth artist. The geometric mark used across this site is a structural placeholder, not a substitute for commissioned Indigenous design.

For investors and trading partners

A living asset with a live price.

It is a fully-fished 9.90% share of the BC coastwide sablefish quota, backed by a six-vessel fleet, forty licences, and a three-year utilization record of 101.8%. Every pound that leaves the deck is auctioned to graded buyers, priced against a live forward curve, and settled with the harvester on the label.
